Guest blog: Edie Ramer on Yum-yum love …

Today, I’m please to welcome Edie Ramer to my blog. Edie is one of my author friends. She’s the author of Stardust Miracle, Dead People, and other books. Take it away, Edie:

YUM-YUM LOVE

Edie RamerOne of the things Jennifer and I have in common is a love of cheese. A few years ago, she recommended a favorite cheese brand to me, unaware that the cheese factory is located in a tiny “unincorporated community” not far from my house. If I remember correctly, the only other business in the area is a bar.

The village of Miracle, Wisconsin, in my Miracle Interrupted series is a bit bigger, with a population of 629, but the place that employs the most people is still a cheese factory. There’s also a small grocery store, a beauty salon, a bar/restaurant, and a fine Italian dining restaurant. In my novel-in-progress, Miracle Pie, the heroine makes pies and delivers her pies to area businesses and residences.

I love Italian food, I love pies, I love cheese, I love my cat, I love my dogs. And miracles. I really love miracles. So why not put what I love in my books? In Jennifer’s second Bigtime book, Hot Mama, the fiery superhero Fiera can eat enough to feed a dozen people and she never gains weight. I can imagine what fun Jennifer had writing that character. (Fiera shows up in Jennifer’s latest Bigtime book, Nightingale, which I thoroughly enjoyed.)

Miracle LaneI also love men that love women and vice versa. A few years ago, a friend blogged about yum-yum love in books, comparing to antagonistic love. A heroine and hero who actually like each other, compared to a heroine and hero who dislike each other but can’t fight their wild attraction. That stuck with me, because unless the author is skillful, I don’t always believe in the antagonistic romance plot.

So far, most of the books I’ve written have the yum-yum love. Probably my least yum-yum couple is in Dead People, my second published book. And they aren’t antagonistic as much as two people with prickly personalities. When you read my stories, you know that after The End, when the heroine is PMSing and grouchy and bloated, the boyfriend/husband is still going to love her. And when he does something stupid (which is bound to happen, because he is a man), she’ll love him, too.

Like Jennifer with her Bigtime series, the main characters from one Miracle Interrupted story will show up in future stories, which is fun for me and I hope for readers. The third book, Miracle Lane, is just released! I’m excited about it. Here’s the description:

As they dig up Nia’s past, the attraction between them grows. Their brains may be damaged, but their bodies and hearts are working just fine.

    Edie, what a wonderful post! You’re such a talented author, and I can’t wait to read MIRACLE LANE. 🙂

    As for ‘yum-yum love’, I truly believe it in, and love reading (and writing) novels where there’s an attraction AND a friendship. Friends forgive everything. That’s priceless in a relationship.

    How could I not stop and comment on a book about yum yum love and cheese in the same post. I’m a huge fan of both 🙂 Although I have certainly seen real life examples of the other love!

    I’ve been lucky enough to read Miracle Lane. It’s delightful! Hopefully it will be a wonderful seller for you 😉

      Dale, it’s crazy that some people don’t treasure the yum-yum love. I’ve seen the opposite of that in real life, too. I don’t like being around people like that. As for cheese, how is it we never talked about that subject? lol

    Edie, your new release looks exciting! I have read a number of your book and find you to be a skilled and interesting author.
    My idea for a perfect yum-yum love would be a summer romance between high school and college, the couple go their separate ways and meet in their AARP years in some sort of a paranormal way. They recapture their lost summer and youthful love revives their aging bodies.

    Hi Edie! I love cheese! I am a picky person when it comes to food but not cheese. Everything tastes better with cheese – even if my family doesn’t agree. I have Stardust Miracle already but haven’t read that. I will get on it! I agree with you about Dead People, but I think they were allowed to be prickly considering their circumstances. I like Yum-Yum Love where the hero and heroine like each other and don’t fight their attraction. It doesn’t have to be hard! Congrats on Miracle Lane!

      Amy, great to be friends with another cheese lover. Maybe because I live in Wisconsin, pretty much everyone I know loves cheese. I agree with you that falling in love doesn’t have to be hard. I think I’ll save that as a quote. 🙂

        I am in Illinois and everytime someone in my family goes to WI for anything we always ask them to bring cheese curds back. The good ones – not the ones we have in our stores down here.

    Amy, I live in southeastern Wisconsin, about 1 1/2 hours from Illinois. Cheese curds are the best! I’ve found a new cheese called Fontini that I love.

    Hi Edie – I will definitely have to check out the Miracle Interrupted series. I’ve enjoyed the books of yours that I’ve read (Cattitude, Dragon Blues, and Dead People) and I loved the Entangled anthology. Sometimes I get so tired of the inherent conflict in those antagonistic relationships, so I love books where the leads are attracted to each other and not afraid to show it (especially when it’s the guy chasing after the girl).

      Jen, in Cattitude, I’m pretty sure it was the girl chasing after the guy. But then, the girl was a former cat. lol Mostly, though it is the guy who chases the girl in my books. I think it’s good for their egos when she lets him catch her. 🙂

    Your right. I don’t think that I’ve read many books where friendship and compatibility exist before love comes. To me that makes for a deeper more romantic story. I believe in Yum-Yum love. I’m looking forward to your next book.

      Rosemary, yes, compatibility is very important if you want a happily ever after. Or at least, a comfortable ever after. That’s something I hadn’t considered.
