Giving in to the buzz …
I have to admit that I’m a sucker for buzz. Hype. Buildup. If there’s something that it seems like everyone is talking about, I usually want to know what all the fuss is about, whether it’s books, movies, television shows, or music.
Like The Walking Dead television show. Now, I don’t particularly like zombies. It’s just not something I normally enjoy reading or watching (brains!). But it seems like everyone loves the show, and a couple of my friends recommended it to me as well. So I bought Wheezley (who is a zombie fan) the first season DVD set of The Walking Dead for Christmas, with the idea that if he liked and recommended it, well then I could watch it too.
Yes, there are lots of zombies (brains!) in the show, and it is visceral at times (that poor horse!), but I enjoyed the first season. I can see what all the fuss is about. (And I’ve also realized that I am woefully unprepared for a zombie apocalypse.)
I’m glad I gave in to the buzz and gave The Walking Dead a chance. I think the next buzzy thing that I will try will be Game of Thrones. Not sure if I’ll start with the book or the first season DVDs.
What about you guys? Have you given in to the buzz and watched The Walking Dead or something else? What television shows are you enjoying right now?
My husband started watching this show last year. I’m am completely not into horror stuff so I refused to watch. What I did do was sit on our computer with sound cancelling headphones and sneak peaks of the screen. So the couple episodes he did watch I knew what was going on. I would even ask him questions after.
Now he has all of season 1, but has yet to finish the season. I just can’t sit and watch the whole thing. Buzz or not.
I’m not usually a big fan of horror either, but I enjoyed the first season, and I’ll probably be getting the season 2 DVDs to watch at some point as well. The zombie stuff can be gross, but there’s a lot of interesting drama/debates among the still-living folks too.
Been meaning to watch Walking Dead, going to Netflix it now. I really like Game of Thrones and absolutely loved first 2 seasons of Spartacus. Great writing on both. Gratitude!
My significant other really likes Spartacus too. That’s another show I’ve been meaning to watch on DVD.
I’m a huge zombie fan, so I was drooling for this one even before it started. And I like it, I really do. But sometimes I get annoyed by all the drama when what I really want is more zombies & more fighting zombies. And sometimes, the decisions those folks make are downright stupid. But I’m still watching & still enjoying. And in case you were wondering…I *am* ready–well, half ready, anyway– for the Zombie Apocalypse. 😉
Yeah, I don’t think I would survive the zombie apocalypse. I don’t have tools, duct tape, or anything that would come in handy. LOL.
Sweetie and I got suckered in and DVR’d the first season on one of those ‘marathon’ days’. I’ve been scaring Sweetie with my enthusiastic “shoot him, shoot him!” comments during the last couple episodes of this season. At least he knows I won’t hesitate to protect the kiddos if animated corpses shamble up to our front door.
That’s one reason I like watching shows on DVD — you can watch several episodes at one time. I might try to get caught up with one of the marathons of season 2.
I’m not really a tv watcher, I’d rather be reading. I can personally say that the zombie or even the vampire shows do not catch my interest at all. Game of Thrones sounds too political though I have read similar stories (usually they have magic in them). My niece got me stuck on Once Upon a Time though it’s starting to lose my interest.
I like Once Upon a Time too. I like the different takes on the fairy tale characters.
Yeah, especially Red Riding Hood as a werewolf. That was totally unexpected.
I was thinking that Granny was going to turn out to be the wolf.
It seems like every decade or so I get really hooked on a TV series (X-Files, Lost), and The Walking Dead is my new favorite. I’m a sucker for apocalyptic stories so this show hits all my buttons. The 2nd season marathon before the season finale starts Sunday morning, and I’ll be glued to the TV all day. 🙂 I also enjoy True Blood and The River. Game of Thrones and Spartacus both look good to me, but I’m also a fanatical book reader, so it seems like I never have enough time to do it all!
I’ll have to see if I can record the marathon. That way, I won’t have to wait for the DVDs to come out. I know. I wish I had more time to read too.
I was there watching the Walking Dead from the first showing on. Love it. Then again I’m a huge horror fan. They integrate just enough drama, to make you wonder and get a feel for what it would be like to endure the characters fate. I see shows like this and want to work out and make sure I’m in shape – you know just in case…
Another show you might want to look into is The River. They’re down to the season finale, but well worth renting the first season. Took me by surprise.
Since you’re not exactly into horror, I won’t recommend American Horror Story, a series based on a haunted house and the twisted residents who have died there. (Hugs)Indigo
Heh. That’s funny about staying in shape to outrun the zombies. I keep thinking about that poor horse in the first season …
Oh, I forgot about American Horror Story…the first season was *excellent*, can’t wait to see what they do for the 2nd season. As you noted about the The River, AHS took me by surprise, also.
I’ve heard a lot of folks talking about American Horror Story too. It looks interesting.
I’ve started watching The Walking Dead after it was recommended by a friend. Though I’m not much into zombies either I think the story line behind the show is excellent. Season three is almost over and believe me it was totally worth it.
I’ve also read Games of Thrones and just bought the first season. The book was beyond great and I can’t wait to get into the series too. I recommend reading the books first but then again I always say that. 🙂
I’ve heard so many good things about the Game of Thrones show. I may try it first just to see if I would like the storyline of the books.
i finally gave in to the buzz of Game of Thrones & it was completely worth it! i watched it all over a day & a half. it is like the tudors+lord of the rings+the borgias. i started reading the book right after, and it pretty much exactly follows the book, some of the dialogue is word for word from the book, so it is kinda a toss up of whether to watch it or read it first. but i highly recommend it!
Thanks for the info. I wondered how closely the show followed the books.
