In case you didn’t know …

The Summer Olympics start tomorrow – and I’m already a little sick of them. Mainly because of The Today Show. That’s what I turn on in the mornings before I go to work (usually to see what the weather’s going to be), and Matt, Meredith, and the rest of the crew have been incessantly hyping the Olympics for weeks now, as if they are the only journalists going to Beijing.

I know it’s a huge event, but give it a break, guys. There’s still stuff going on in other parts of the world too. Just because your network is the one broadcasting the games doesn’t mean you need to scream at me every morning about them.

That being said, I always love watching the Olympics, although I prefer the Winter games to the Summer ones. Bobsledding and doing the luge look like so much fun! Running a marathon, not so much.

One of my favorite childhood memories is the week that my cousin, Natalie, spent with me one summer. Every night, we’d have some kind of treat, then settle in to watch the Summer Olympics. Good times. 😎

This year, I’m looking forward to watching the gymnastics competitions and some of the more obscure stuff, like diving and synchronized swimming (they still do that, right?).

What about you? Going to watch the Olympics? What’s your favorite sport?

I adore the gymnastics. I am of a certain age, and I recall quite clearly the olympics of 1976, when Nadia Comaneci wowwed the world. I promptly enrolled in gymnastics and just as promptly dropped out. It was so not for me.

I liked watching the runners because I ran track in high school, and my husband and I used to watch the Hockey. Oh, wait. That’s winter olympics.

I do think the Olympics were more special when they didn’t stagger them every two years. You had to wait four years for another Olympic year. It was great.

I don’t know. I like the staggered Olympics. Four years is a looong time to wait for them to roll around.

I like watching the fencing too, even if I don’t understand the rules. 😎

I am over the build up to the Olympics and the talk about the smog and stuff like that!

I do like watching the actual sports though – doesn’t really matter what but the swimming and diving are right up there.

I had to actually turn off the Today show today. They are doing their best to make me not want to watch the Olympics this time around! Already sick of them!

That being said, I’ll probably watch the diving and the gymnastics and wish I were even remotely that talented. And if soccer is televised at all, you know that Alex will make me watch that! 😀

  5. Jennifer Estep says:

Marg — Me too. I just want the games to start already.

Edie — I always enjoy watching the figure skating too.

Amy — I’m afraid it will be like this for the next two weeks. Sigh.

I think soccer will be on one of the channels. So be prepared. Alex can start educating the little one about the game for when she’s the next Mia when she grows up. 😎

I’m going to be in the minority here, but I’m refusing to do anything to watch or read about the Olympics because I am dissenting from collaborating with the Chinese government. I notice that their promises of open access for journalists and clean air have not been fulfilled. Other people have the right to watch and cheer; I have the same right to dissent from them. Instead, I am praying for their people.

    Sincerely,
    Louise B

  7. Jennifer Estep says:

Louise — You’re absolutely right. People have the right to watch or not watch. Which is one of the things that makes the U.S. such a great place to live.

Perhaps one day, everyone all over the world will enjoy the freedoms and prosperity that we do. That’s what I hope for.
